Hard won wisdom from a world war

While society remembers the astonishing number of people who fought in the first world war, and the huge number who died in the horrendous 1914-18
battles, let me pass on the message from a fighter who survived.
It comes from the grandfather of historian Richard Jones whose excellent YouTube video that I featured on Tuesday reminded us of the shocking, ghastly waste of men and money of that war.

Decidedly sardonic

Richard illustrates his short documentary with a number of photographs taken on the battlefields. Among the men caught by the cameras was the brother of Richard's grandfather.
Richard, guide of the excellent London Walking Tours, told me, 'His brother was killed and effectively lost as no remains were found to bury.'
The message that his grandfather offered more than 50 years ago, and has lived with Richard since childhood, was decidedly sardonic. Continues on the blogs for the ocea advnturing book,
